Acne Scar Removal
There are many exciting new advances in treating those foreboding acne scars. New procedures include laser technologies for skin resurfacing and other cosmetic options for treatment and removal of acne scars. Treatment depends on the depth and size of the scar as well as the individual’s skin type. Deep scars can be successfully treated with Surgical Excision, CO2 Laser Resurfacing and fillers such as Juvederm. More shallow scars, on the other hand, can be treated with Dermabrasion, Chemical Peels and CO2 Laser Resurfacing. At Aesthetic Edge, our award winning facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Keith Marcus, offers personalized treatment plans for each patient. During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Marcus will determine which procedure is optimal and he will personally address any of your questions or concerns.
There are a number of cosmetic treatment options for Acne Scar Removal. Just as there are different types of acne and levels of severity, there are also different types of scarring. Depending on the patient’s skin type and the severity of scarring, Dr. Marcus will determine the best treatment plan to remove or reduce acne scars.
For patients with deep ice pick scarring, treatment options include Surgical Excision, CO2 Laser Resurfacing (Deep FX), and Juvederm treatments. Surgical Excision or Punch Excision is useful in medium depth scars. Deeper scars may be cut out and sutured together, resulting in a less noticeable linear scar. CO2 Laser Resurfacing is a newer advancement and phenomenal option for precise treatment of acne scars. The CO2 laser will peel away old layers of inelastic skin and aid in tightening and remodeling the collagen fibers deeper in the dermis, thereby getting rid of that noticeable depression and discoloration. The CO2 Laser can be combined with the excision method for optimal scar removal. Another treatment option for deep atrophic scars is injection of fillers such as Juvederm; this raises the surface of the scar. This particular treatment would need to be repeated every 8-12 months.
Patients with shallow to medium depth, non-ice pick scarring are good candidates for Dermabrasion, Chemical Peels and CO2 Laser Resurfacing. Dermabrasion uses a wire brush or a diamond tip, high speed rotating brush to abrade the superficial layer of the skin. In the dermal layers Dermabrasion removes shallow scars and reduces the depth of deeper scars by stimulating new collagen synthesis. Chemical Peels are used for shallow scar removal; removing the superficial layers of the skin with a chemical application will stimulate new tissue regeneration and ultimately form fresh, new skin with additional collagen layers.
