Hydrate your skin!

January 17th, 2012 by Chandler - Beauty Contributor
Respond

Water is the most abundant compound on Earth’s surface, covering about 70% of the planet. It also makes up 70% of youh20r skin.

We use it so much of it every day. Whether it’s drinking, showering, washing dishes, using it to cook, or doing laundry… it’s an obvious necessity.

There are so many benefits of  drinking wate r and staying hydrated. One of the most important is drinking enough to keep your skin healthy. Water is indeed vital to having beautiful, dewy skin.

I spoke to one of our medical aestheticians about the importance of drinking water for healthy skin and here is what she said:

“HYDRATION, HYDRATION, HYDRATION! Think of a plant and its leaves; When the plant is hydrated its leaves are pliable and supple, but, when the plant is dry and has not been watered, the leaves will become dry and stiff. It’s the same with your skin. Water helps with elasticity. The more hydrated the skin is, less fine lines and wrinkles. If your skin is dehydrated it will look dull and lifeless. Not only will the wrinkles make you look aged but the texh202ture of dry skin will as well. ”

Good ole’ H20 is not only important for gorgeous skin, but for your health in general. We lose most of our water through perspiration, urination, and evaporation. Your lungs alone expel between 2 – 4 cups of water daily just through normal breathing (more if you exercise) and even more on a cold day.

With that being said, pick up a refreshing glass of water and do your skin a big favor! Drink up!

Oxygenetix

What coOx2uld be better than a foundation that actually heals your skin post laser and surgical procedures?

Made for all skin types, Oxygenetix is a liquid foundation that disguises various skin conditions, heals, and even helps to eliminate procedure scars. The Ceravitae in the foundation stimulates collagen cell and connective tissue growth to aging or wounded skin. As well as healing, this medical grade make-up is breathable, oil free, and does not clog your pores.Ox1

Personally, I am very picky with skincare and makeup because I have a very red, dry skin type. I use Oxygenetix every day as a regular foundation, and it has been the best make-up I have ever used! It is perfect for my sensitive skin and gives me a beautiful dewy finish. I happen to use the ‘Ivory’ color for my skin and it matches perfectly! Not once has it left me feeling cakey or orange, which are problems I have had in the past with other foundations. Another issue I have had in the past is my make-up not lasting and rubbing off during the day. With Oxygenetix my face looks as good at 6 PM as it did at 8 AM! I have also noticed that I have had less break-outs in my problem areas while using this make-up as opposed to a more thick, oil based foundation. My old make-up left my skin feeling thick, and greasy. I would constantly change my products because I could never find the right one. Well, I can now confidently say that I finally found my perfect match.

CoolSculpting

As much as we work out, diet, and eat as healthy as we can, there are still those problem areas that will not go away. It seems virtually impossible to lose those love handles! Some people automatically start thinking surgery:  Liposuction, tummy-tuck, all of the above.CoolSculpting_2

Well, here’s the skinny on how to eliminate that muffin top and hop back into those skinny jeans without invasive surgery or any down time: CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting by ZELTIQ is a non invasive procedure that was developed by Harvard scientists to actually freeze fat cells without any needles, suction hoses, knifes or lasers! You just get your treatment, and then get on with your day.

You will see an improvement of the treated area after just one visit, but you can lose more after multiple treatments. Each treatment is about an hour long. After the following few months, the frozen fat cells are naturally flushed from the body. There is absolutely no down time after the treatment, and it’s FDA cleared. So, what could be better than a treatment that gets rid of those problem areas with a non surgical approach?

Aesthetic Edge is proud to introduce that CoolSculpting is now available in our office! Call us to make an appointment for your CoolSculpting treatment today!

article-page-main-ehow-images-a07-to-r1-pumpkin-plant-pests-800x800When you think of fall you think of pumpkin, at least I do! They are sold everywhere this time of year and I couldn’t help but think that they could be used for more than just décor.

Their rich orange color isn’t the only thing fabulous about them, come to find out, pumpkin is great for your skin as it contains antioxidants such as vitamins A, vitamins C, and Zinc! Which is great for tissue repair and anti-aging.

Here is a recipe for a wonderful face mask that you can mix up and enjoy at home, to get that smooth autumn glow:

3 tsp canned pureed pumpkin or fresh pumpkin (with seeds removed!)

½ tsp honey (adds a kiss of moisture)

A pinch of cinnamon (OPTIONAL- For that authentic pumpkin pie smell!)pumpkinpuree

½ tsp brown sugar OR raw oats (OPTIONAL- Only if exfoliation is desired)

If you have oily skin, add a splash of apple cider vinegar.

If you have dry skin, add a splash of heavy whipping cream

Combine ingredients in a mixing bowl and apply to a clean face.

Leave on for 10-30 minutes before rinsing off and Follow with your normal moisturizer!

Pumpkin8_medium Please remember that this mask is probably not well suited for super sensitive skin.

This recipe makes about 1 face mask, but you can add more. Invite your friends over and have a pumpkin beauty bash!

Happy Fall!

Botox VS Dysport, Whats the difference?

September 21st, 2011 by Chandler - Beauty Contributor
Respond

The number one question that gets asked by patients is: “What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?”. injection

Simple, it’s the Pepsi-Coke difference. Botox and Dysport are both Botulinum toxins and do the same thing.  The Botulinum toxin is injected into muscles to relax them to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Both have also been approved for other cosmetic and medical uses, and doctors administer them widely to smooth wrinkles even in areas they haven’t been specifically approved to treat.

Many doctors and patients have different opinions about each of these two injectables. Dysport is said to be slightly cheaper than Botox. Dysport is only 1/3 the strength of Botox in each unit, so patients need about three times as many units of Dysport to get the same results as you would with one unit of Botox. As a result, the cost of a Dysport treatment will most likely end up being the same as Botox.

In botAD20110924967491-Dysport treatmeh products, the toxin is attached to a carrier protein which is the difference between them. The carrier protein is smaller for Dysport than for Botox. Because it is smaller, Dysport tends to spread faster and over a wider area than Botox. Dysport diffuses a bit farther than Botox from the injection point: one to three centimeters compared to Botox’s one centimeter. This means that the health professional doing the injections must be very skilled to ensure that the drug does not spread to nearby muscles and cause eyelid and/or eyebrow drooping or other unwanted side effects. Dysport is said to have a faster onset too, with results beginning to appear within one to seven days of treatment, while Botox has been said between three and ten days to become effective.

Both Botox and Dysport  are known to have great results, it is just a personal preference. Ask your healthcare professional which one would be the right fit for you!

Are Facials REALLY worth it?!

September 14th, 2011 by Chandler - Beauty Contributor
Respond

Facials on the regular facebic3do good for your mind, body, and not to mention skin. The relaxation factor isn’t the only reason you should treat yourself to regular facials, your skin would benefit tremendously!  So many people ask, Are facials really worth it? The answer to that question is yes, yes, YES! In a perfect world, you should get a facial regularly to maintain that healthy skin glow, to prevent clogged large pores, anti-aging, maintain the balance of natural oils on your face, and to help treat imperfections such as acne scars. Th ere ar e many different types of facials and facial procedures that Aestheticians can do to treat your particular skin type. Some are:

Microdermabrasion is a type of non-invasive facial procedure. Microderm can recharge your look, using tiny crystals painlessFacepic2ly buffing away dry, damaged skin cells while encouraging the rise of new, natural collagen: the building blocks of clear, vibrant, youthful skin. Whether it’s a one time treatment for sun damage or skin discoloration, or a monthly routine to keep your skin refreshed, Microdermabrasion can prove beneficial for just about anyone.

Peels are also popular in the world of facials! They are a one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Sun exposure, acne or just getting older can leave your skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred. If you want your skin to look smoother and younger, consider a chemical peel, which uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers.

LED light treatments are non-invasive treatments that are effective in helping acne and aging of the skin. There are two types of LED light used; Red or Blue. In the anti-aging process, what is important is the collagen production, and red light therapy stimulates collagen growth in your skin. Blue light therapy kills acne bacteria in the skin, but the red light also reduces inflammation from acne and helps with acne scarring.

Talk to your Aesthetician to see what procedure and treatments would be right for your skin, there is so many options! They can also recommend a skin care regimen that you could use every day at home to keep your skin looking fabulous in between facial treatments. Facials are not only rewarding in the sense of relaxation, but the benefits of having healthy skin are endless. You’ll notice a difference, and so will everyone else! So treat yourself more often, your skin will thank you!

Miranda’s Botox experience

September 9th, 2011 by Chandler - Beauty Contributor
Respond

For as long as I can remebotoxmber, I have an always had an   unevenness between my brows. It was not something that most people noticed, but every time I looked in the mirror I fixated on my right brow being lower than my left brow. I had always assumed the unevenness was due to frequently changing my waxing esthetician and plucking in between appointments, but never really knew what caused the difference in my brow’s heights. Now that I only make appointments with our esthetician Ronni, I explained to her my frustration with my brow’s unevenness. I emphasized that I thought that the unevenness was due to previous esthetician carelessness; however, she realized that my forehead muscles were actually the culprit for my different brows’ heights. Immediately, she suggested I talk to Dr. Marcus about getting Botox to help correct my brows and creating evenness between them.

After discussing the idea with Dr. Marcus, we agreed to try a small amount of Botox to even out the height of my brows. Dr. Marcus even said that the Botox will not only help create evenness, but it will also help prevent forming wrinkles in my forehead. Initially, I was pretty nervous because I am absolutely terrified of needles and shots. As I sat in the chair waiting for Dr. Marcus to get ready, I tried to mentally prepare myself for the pain. I closed my eyes for the first shot and was shocked when Dr. Marcus said he was finished with the first shot—I hardly felt it! The other girls in the office had told me the pain was minimal, I assumed they were just trying to make feel more comfortable, but honestly it felt like a tiny pinprick. Even if you have the lowest threshold for pain, this shot will be completely tolerable.botox2

A few days after the procedure, I looked in the mirror and was so happy to see that my eyebrows were completely even! Not only were they even, but I still have movement in my forehead and it looks completely natural. Being able to look in the mirror and not fixated on my brows was definitely worth a few little pinpricks. In addition to my satisfaction with my immediate results, I love knowing Botox also serves as a preventative step from forming wrinkles. Even though most people think Botox is only for people in their 30s or older, I know firsthand that this product can also be used to help correct asymmetry and prevent wrinkles. I love it!

Microdermabrasion for scars, pores and aging!

March 1st, 2011 by Derma Diva
Respond

42-21202613Microdermabrasion, also referred to as “Power Peel” is a popular technique used to treat several skin problems. Microderm is known for resurfacing and rejuvenating the skin by sloughing off dead skin cells and boosting blood circulation. As a result new collagen & younger looking skin is produced.

During the treatment an Aesthetician, will use a wand to spread fine crystals across the skin while dead cells are vacuumed off using a suction device. Some compare it to mild sandblasting of the skin. The degree of exfoliation depends on the number and the speed of passes over the skin as well as the amount of suction, frequency and consistency of treatment.

Noticeable results can occur in one treatment particularly with improvement in skin tone and texture. However, results are best when done in a series of 4-6 treatments, approximately two weeks apart. No downtime is involved. However temporary photosensitivity can occur and it is imperative that sunscreen be used following treatment.

If you are most concerned with acne scars, hyper pigmentation, enlarged pores, aging and sun damaged skin then Microdermabrasion may be the right treatment for you.

While Microdermabrasion is an effective choice for skin rejuvenation, it is not for all skin types or conditions. A Licensed Aesthetician can assess your skin in determining what type of treatment will give glowing results.
